Hydrocortisone Dosage: How Much to Use and Application Instructions
Overview
Doses shown reflect standard OTC product labeling. Always check your specific product as concentrations and formulations vary.
Topical hydrocortisone for hemorrhoids is available over-the-counter for external use. OTC products are creams and ointments only; hydrocortisone suppositories are prescription-only products and are not covered here.
Standard OTC Dosing
Creams and Ointments (External Use)
| Product Strength | Application | Frequency |
|---|---|---|
| 1% | Thin layer to affected area | Up to 3–4 times daily |
Application instructions:
- Clean the affected area gently with mild soap and water
- Pat dry thoroughly
- Apply a thin layer of cream or ointment
- Wash hands after application
- Do not cover with airtight bandages unless directed
Duration Limits
Maximum treatment duration: 7 days
Do not use topical hydrocortisone products for hemorrhoids for more than 7 consecutive days without consulting a healthcare provider. Prolonged use of topical corticosteroids can cause:
- Skin thinning (atrophy)
- Increased risk of infection
- Delayed healing
- Stretch marks in severe cases
If symptoms persist after 7 days, discontinue use and consult a healthcare provider.
Special Populations
Elderly
No dosage adjustment typically needed, but elderly patients may have thinner skin and should be monitored for local side effects.
Pregnancy
Consult a healthcare provider before use. Tell your doctor if you are pregnant, plan to become pregnant, or are breastfeeding.
Children
- Children under 12 years of age: do not use OTC hydrocortisone — consult a doctor
- OTC label directions apply to adults and children 12 years and older only
Missed Dose
If you miss a dose, apply it as soon as you remember. If it is almost time for the next dose, skip the missed dose. Do not apply extra product to make up for a missed application.
Tips for Effective Use
- Apply after bowel movements for best results
- Gently clean and dry the area before each application
- Use the smallest amount needed to cover the affected area
- Avoid rubbing vigorously when applying
- Consider using unmedicated wipes for cleaning to reduce irritation
