Phenol Dosage: How Much and How Often to Use
Doses shown reflect standard OTC product labeling. Always check your specific product as concentrations and formulations vary.
Overview
Phenol throat products are dosed by sprays or lozenges, not by milligrams. OTC products contain 1.4% phenol or less, which is considered safe for self-treatment. Dosing is straightforward—typically 5 sprays or 1 lozenge every 2 hours as needed, with attention to age restrictions and maximum daily use.
Standard Dosing
Throat sprays (like Chloraseptic):
- Adults and children 6+: 5 sprays to affected area
- May repeat every 2 hours
- Or use as directed on product label
- Spit out or swallow after 15 seconds
Children 3-6 years (spray):
- 3 sprays to affected area
- Adult supervision required
- May repeat every 2 hours
- Check specific product for age limits
Lozenges:
- Adults and children 6+: 1 lozenge every 2 hours
